Liverpool plots another cash windfall by repeating Dominic Solanke transfer trick

Liverpool remains the only club in the Premier League yet to make a senior signing during the summer transfer window, but the club has at least boosted its coffers with a number of money-making sales.

Fabio Carvalho joined Brentford for an initial $29.52million (£22.5m) - which could rise to $36.08m (£27.5m) if various add-on clauses are met - while Sepp van den Berg also joined the Bees in a similarly structured deal. Liverpool will receive a guaranteed $26.24million (£20m) for the Dutchman, with a possible further $6.56million (£5m) in add-ons.

Another player who departed Liverpool this week is midfielder Bobby Clark, who has joined Austrian side RB Salzburg for around $13.12million (£10m).

That's a guaranteed $68.89million (£52.5m) in sales, and all for players whose prospects of establishing themselves as regulars at Anfield under Arne Slot were minimal.

In another shrewd move, Liverpool inserted sell-on clauses in all of the aforementioned deals, which will see it bag 17.5 per cent of the profit from any future transfer fee involving Carvalho, Van den Berg and Clark from their new clubs.

Liverpool recently benefitted from having inserted a similar clause into the deal that took Dominic Solanke to Bournemouth in 2019. Solanke signed for Liverpool in 2017 for a tribunal-set fee of around $3.94million (£3m) after the striker's Chelsea contract expired, but made little impact at Anfield, scoring just one goal for the Reds.

After spending the 2018-19 season on loan at Bournemouth, Solanke signed for the Cherries permanently in 2019 for what seemed like an inflated fee of around $24.93million (£19m), with Liverpool due to receive 20 per cent of the profit from any future transfer fee.

After proving himself at the highest level with Bournemouth in recent years, Tottenham agreed to pay an initial $72.17million (£55m) for the striker this summer. They could actually end up paying a total of $85.29million (£65m) for Solanke if $13.12million (£10m) worth of add-on clauses are met, which would entitle Liverpool to 20 per cent of the $60.36million (£46m) profit Bournemouth made on the sale. That equates to $12.07million (£9.2m).

Although Liverpool will hope it doesn't end up regretting letting the likes of Van den Berg and Carvalho leave, it will no doubt hope that both men earn it even more money in the future by proving themselves at Brentford and moving on to bigger clubs for substantial transfer fees.
