Trey Nyoni sent Liverpool boss Arne Slot a timely reminder on Saturday afternoon as he scored for the Under-21s in their 2-1 Premier League 2 defeat to Leicester City.

The promising teenager featured heavily during pre-season due to Liverpool having so many players away on international duty. With them away on their extended breaks, Nyoni impressed out in the United States on Liverpool's pre-season tour.

And he even scored on Liverpool's return to Anfield , netting the Reds fourth goal in their 4-1 friendly win over Sevilla prior to the start of the Premier League season. However, Nyoni was not selected in the Reds match day squad to face Ipswich Town last week, and won't be involved this weekend either when Liverpool welcomes Brentford to Anfield.

The Reds enjoyed a 2-0 win in their Premier League opener against the Tractor Boys, with second half goals from Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota enough to see Liverpool past the newly promoted side.

And while Nyoni may have offered Slot a timely reminder of his impressive talents with his Premier League 2 strike for the Reds U21's, it seems unlikely he will be breaking into the first team match day squad anytime soon. Ahead of the visit of Brentford, Slot outlined that young players must play - hinting Nyoni could go out on-loan to gain some much needed first team minutes.

Should Liverpool look to keep Trey Nyoni with their first team squad this season? Let us know in the comments section below.

"Young players, if they want to develop they have to play and it is always like this," Slot told the press. "They come through the ranks and you are good enough to play as many minutes or there is too much competition in your position.

"This team that we have has a lot of homegrown players and one of them, Trey Nyoni, is training with us on a daily basis — still only 17. This club will always bring good youngsters.

"It is always a challenge to find the right moment or if they have played a lot of minutes [on loan] they want to make the next step in their career. If Virgil van Dijk is playing there or Mohamed Salah is playing there, it is best for them and also the club to let them go.

"You always want to take care of your own interest but you also have a responsibility to the players. If they want to play somewhere and they are not happy with 500 or 600 minutes — because these youngsters played minutes [mainly] in the cup — then in my opinion, you have to let them develop somewhere else."

Liverpool.com says: "Trey Nyoni's talent is clear for all to see. In a summer that has seen Liverpool shift on a number of youngsters this summer, Nyoni is one who has been kept around, emphasising Liverpool's belief he has the ability to become a first team player in the future. However, there is no chance Nyoni will play for the Reds first team this season, regardless of his talent. That means he will either remain with the U21's this season, or go out on-loan."
