Jurgen Klopp reveals what he thought after watching Arne Slot's first match as Liverpool boss

Jurgen Klopp has given his verdict after watching Arne Slot's first match as Liverpool boss against Ipswich Town last weekend.

The Reds secured a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory over their newly-promoted hosts thanks to second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah , despite struggling to get going during a nervy first-half at Portman Road.

Nonetheless, Slot masterminded an opening-day victory in his first competitive game in charge of Liverpool and secured an important three points to get the 2024/25 Premier League campaign off to the perfect start.

All eyes were certainly on the Dutchman after taking over from Klopp at the start of the summer, with Liverpool's former boss leaving major shoes to fill following almost nine years of success at Anfield in which he won all but one of the available trophies on offer during his reign.

But Slot appeared to pass his first test with flying colors and now Klopp has revealed what he thought of the performance after tuning in to see how his former side got on in its first competitive game without him.

As per Anfield Sector on X (formerly Twitter), Klopp said: "When I saw the games, that's why I watched it, not to think, oh, how does it look? The work he (Slot) did was obvious, the ideas obvious. And that's the best you can say about the coach."

Slot turned to many of his big names in his first ever Premier League line-up, with the likes of Alisson , Trent Alexander-Arnold , Virgil Van Dijk , Andy Robertson , Alexis Mac Allister , Dominik Szoboszlai , Salah and Luis Diaz all thrown in from the off.

Interestingly, Ryan Gravenberch continued to be chosen as the holding midfielder following his performances against Manchester United and Sevilla in pre-season, while Jarell Quansah partnered Van Dijk in defense and Jota started ahead of Darwin Nunez upfront.

And it proved to be the correct lineup as the Reds emerged as 2-0 victors, producing a performance that earned the plaudits of many.

That includes former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, who admitted that Slot made a "really good start" to his tenure as Liverpool boss, and Reds legend Jamie Carragher , who claimed some of Liverpool's football against Ipswich was "out of this world".

However, the pair were also left baffled as they discussed the tactics used by the new Liverpool head coach when building-up from the back during the win over Ipswich, in particular the instructions given to Robertson to come behind Van Dijk to receive the ball from the center-back at one point during the game.
