Liverpool head coach Arne Slot will get his first proper taste of Anfield later today as he makes his debut in a competitive game on home soil. The Reds are set to take on Brentford in their second match of the new Premier League season.

Gary Neville , though, typically trying to wind Liverpool fans and Jamie Carragher up, has aimed a jibe at the Anfield atmosphere. The Sky Sports pundit — like everyone else — will no doubt be speaking a lot about the Reds in the build-up to next week's trip to Old Trafford, which is one the biggest matches of the season.

"I think Anfield since the new stand has been built, a little bit has gone from it," Neville said during a Sky Sports YouTube video .

"So those big European nights didn’t count? They had the new stand... 2019," Carragher hit back. Liverpool's Main Stand was finished in 2016, meaning it was there for big nights including against Barcelona in the Champions League in 2019.

"Oh, we are talking about historically, five years ago?" Neville said. "It is not that great anymore Anfield. I have been there a lot over the last few years."

After taking on Brentford at home, Liverpool will have to wait several weeks before it is back in action on Merseyside again. After the visit to Manchester United comes the September international break.

Nottingham Forest comes to Anfield next but that match is not until September 14. A week later, the Reds will host Bournemouth at home before ending next month away at Wolves.

Liverpool.com says: Neville was only ever going to make some sort of comment against Liverpool — it's like a reflex reaction whenever the Reds are mentioned! It will be up to the Reds fans in attendance later today to prove him wrong.
