Arne Slot already has answer to Liverpool's Martin Zubimendi transfer problem

Liverpool's failed pursuit of Martin Zubimendi has left many Reds supporters concerned about the squad's lack of midfield depth ahead of the closure of the summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp made wholesale changes to Liverpool's midfield last year, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominic Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo all coming in, and Jordan Henderson , Fabinho , Naby Keita , Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner leaving.

The overhaul injected much-needed energy into the engine room after a disappointing 2022-23 campaign that saw Liverpool finish outside the top four, yet ahead of the transfer window closing this week, some supporters are worried that Arne Slot does not have enough at his disposal in midfield, particularly after the retirement of Thiago Alcantara.

Thiago was dogged by injuries throughout his Liverpool career, particularly in the previous two seasons, but despite his absence not being keenly felt last term, Liverpool remains keen to sign a replacement No.6 ahead of the transfer deadline on August 30.

It had looked as though Liverpool would replace Thiago with Spain's European Championship-winning midfielder, Martin Zubimendi, but the midfielder opted to remain in LaLiga with Real Sociedad.

That decision means Liverpool remains the only Premier League club not to have made a first-team signing this summer. However, while the fans' thirst for a new signing is yet to be quenched, perhaps the Reds' need for a reinforcements is not as pressing as many might have you believe.

Liverpool still has Wataru Endo, while Ryan Gravenberch also said that new boss Slot had told him to focus on playing in the No.6 role this season - a position he thrived in during the Reds' opening-weekend win over Ipswich.

“I had a little chat with him [Slot] and he said I have to focus on the No.6 and No.8 positions," Gravenberch said. “Now I play at No.6. In the past I played it as well so I know what I have to do. I’ve enjoyed playing there.

“It’s a little bit of a different system than we played last season, but I think everyone has adapted to it. Now we have to build it further and further. I think at the end we can be a really dominant team.”

Liverpool may well end up signing a new No.6 before the transfer deadline, but if it doesn't, it shouldn't be all doom and gloom - the Reds should have more than enough to get by with the options they currently have.
