Jamie Carragher agrees with Gary Neville over Anfield atmosphere after Liverpool beats Brentford

Jamie Carragher admitted he was surprised by the subdued atmosphere at Anfield during Liverpool's win over Brentford on Sunday.

The Arne Slot era at Anfield got off to the perfect start as goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah secured a second successive 2-0 victory for the Reds.

However, while the performance on the pitch was extremely impressive, Carragher was left feeling a little underwhelmed by the display of Liverpool's supporters in the stands.

"It is early in Slot's time and the most important thing is Liverpool being successful," Carragher said. "It will be different, there is no doubt. There has been a bit of a strange atmosphere considering it is the first home game of the season. Is that because the style of play is going to be different and not as end to end? It has been a bit flat at times with Liverpool in control for the most part.

"Last season was a rollercoaster and so exciting. But they needed more games like that last season. That was almost a Man City performance, the game felt done after that second goal. It will be different and it remains to be seen how that affects the atmosphere for supporters. It could prove to be more successful."

Carragher's comments come after Gary Neville recently suggested that Anfield has lost a little bit of its spark in recent years.

In a debate with Carragher about the stadiums with the best atmospheres in the Premier League , Neville said: “I think Anfield since the new stand has been built, a little bit has gone from it,” Neville posed.

“So those big European nights didn’t count? They had the new stand, 2019,” Carragher hit back. Oh we are talking about historically, five years ago? It is not that great any more Anfield, I have been there a lot over the last few years."
