Federico Chiesa has already endeared himself to Liverpool fans in little-known clip

Federico Chiesa may not be as highly regarded as he was a few years ago but he could turn out to be a shrewd acquisition by Liverpool for a modest transfer fee.

The Italian is not wanted by Juventus' new manager Thiago Motta, and given he is into the final year of his contract in Turin he has been made available for around €15million ($17m) .

That's a significant reduction in price from three years ago, when Italian outlet La Repubblica reported that Liverpool had a €100million ($112M) bid for Chiesa turned down.

Chiesa has contended with fitness problems in recent seasons, most notably a serious knee injury that impacted his previously explosive speed.

Liverpool is yet to sign a new player this summer but new sporting director Richard Hughes suggested the club would be opportunistic in the transfer market if appealing deals arose.

Clearly, Arne Slot deems the possibility of signing Chiesa appealing, and should the Italian end up on Merseyside, he will begin his Reds career in credit with many fans for an answer he previously gave to the eternal Gerrard vs Lampard vs Scholes debate.

In a clip that has resurfaced since Liverpool's interest in Chiesa emerged, a supporter asks the Italian during a Juventus match: "Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes?" Chiesa responds: "Who would I rather have in my midfield? Stevie G."

Liverpool remains the only Premier League team that is yet to make a first-team signing this summer but that is set to change ahead of Friday's deadline.

Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is in the process of joining the Reds from Valencia - though he will remain in Spain on loan rather than move to Anfield to be Alisson's understudy - while Chiesa could become the first outfield signing of the Slot era.
