With less than a week remaining until the transfer window slams shut – it never closes gently – Liverpool is on the verge of completing its first signing of the summer. It has been quite the journey to this point.

The Reds were heavily linked with Leny Yoro , entered negotiations for Anthony Gordon and thought they had a deal wrapped up for Martin Zubimendi . That’s a trio of players who each occupy a different position, and the set is completed by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili .

The difference here is that he looks very likely to sign. There’s even a picture of him in a Liverpool kit circulating on social media. If you still have doubts that the Reds might actually sign the player, comments from a director of his current club Valencia should set your mind at ease.

Spanish outlet Marca stated on Monday that the Georgian goalkeeper had been given the go ahead to sign for Liverpool. It was later reported that a medical was taking place the same day, with the leaked photo seeming to confirm that.

As much as the deal is all-but-confirmed, it’s important to remember that we won’t see Mamardashvili turning out for Arne Slot in 2024/25. He will be returning to the Mestalla Stadium on loan. Indeed, Superdeporte mocked up a cover of the goalkeeper on Abbey Road with The Beatles, noting that he needs to ‘Get Back’ to Valencia.

It has been reported by Sport Witness that the club was hoping to raise $45m (£34m/€40m) in exchange for Mamardashvili. However, it claims a deal has been agreed for $34m (£25m/€30m) plus $5.6m (£4.2m/€5m) in add-ons.

Valencia director Miguel Ángel Corona commented on the deal on Monday, essentially confirming that it is set to go through. “There is a lot of closeness to reach the agreement, which includes his presence for one more season with us,” he said. According to Superdeporte, Corona then insisted the details had been agreed between the two clubs and the deal was ‘closed.’

Everything appears to be in place. All we need is an official announcement and a picture of Mamardashvili leaning on a wall at the AXA Training center, and we’re good to go.

Liverpool.com says: There are Liverpool supporters who were beginning to doubt if Richard Hughes was able to complete a deal in his first transfer window. Signing a goalkeeper for the future is unlikely to appease everyone, but it’s a very important transfer for the long term health of the Reds’ first team.
