Giorgi Mamardashvili has officially signed for Liverpool, completing a transfer from Valencia. Though he won't come to Anfield until 2025, he will technically go down as the first signing of the Arne Slot era .

The Georgian goalkeeper arrives in a deal worth an initial $33m (£25m) plus a further $5m (£4m) in add-ons. He will remain with Valencia for the rest of the season before arriving at Anfield in 2025.

There had been talk of a potential loan move elsewhere in the Premier League for Mamardashvili, with Bournemouth mooted. But that would have required navigating league rules that prevent overseas players from being immediately loaned elsewhere within the division, and the eventual solution also allows the 23-year-old to remain where he is settled.

The interest in Mamardashvili did raise doubts over Alisson Becker's long-term future at Liverpool amid continued interest from Saudi Arabia. But he insisted he remains committed to Liverpool last week and said he was happy that a deal for Mamardashvili was being completed.

Mamardashvili will attempt to compete with Alisson next season, unless Liverpool decides that another loan would be best for all parties. But one thing that's for sure is that the Reds have secured a hugely promising young goalkeeper for the future.

The stopper was one of the stars of Euro 2024 , shining even brighter than Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Georgia. The fee agreed has to go down as an astute deal for Liverpool, a fulfilment of the promise to be "opportunistic" made by sporting director Richard Hughes .

Liverpool is also exploring a late move for Italy and Juventus star Federico Chiesa before Friday's deadline. The 26-year-old could be available for as little as $16m (£12m), and has the potential to become the first arrival of the Slot era, albeit no longer the first signing.

Outgoing business before the end of the transfer window is also very possible. It remains to be seen whether or not Joe Gomez gets a move away, while a number of young players including Ben Doak and Stefan Bajcetic could still be on the move as well.
