Liverpool transfer news as defender and exciting winger 'wanted' after Chiesa

Liverpool are linked with another winger even with the imminent arrival of Federico Chiesa - while a move for a central defender could be on the horizon .

Liverpool have made a series of moves towards the end of the summer transfer window, including the first signing of the Arne Slot era - goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardhasvili, who joined for £25 million from Valencia. Mamardhasvili will play for the La Liga club on loan this season, but Italian winger Chiesa is set to join from Juventus for £10 million.

The Reds aren’t done yet, either. The club continues to be linked with further additions as sporting director Richard Hughes picks up the recruitment pace as deadline day on September 1 approaches.

It has been a winning start to the season for Liverpool in the Premier League . But there's tougher tests ahead, and the squad certainly could do with reinforcements ahead of a season set to feature the expanded Champions League format.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today:

    Rayan Cherki (Lyon)

According to L’Equipe, Liverpool are keeping tabs on Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki. The winger has attracted interest in the past from the likes of Chelsea , Fulham , and PSG .

Lyon are reportedly looking for a fee of around $16.6 million after Cherki refused an extension offer at the beginning of the summer. He was expected to leave the club after that dispute, but the club and player appear to have rekindled and Cherki could yet sign a new deal - if he isn’t swayed by a move away.

Liverpool.com says: This is an interesting development, particularly with the imminent arrival of Federico Chiesa.

Given Chiesa has suffered a serious cruciate injury and often picks up knocks as he struggles to stay healthy. Perhaps Cherki is cover, and his relatively inexpensive price tag - and exciting potential - is appealing.

    Mohamed Simakan (RB Leipzig)

RB Leipzig centre-back Mohamed Simakan has long been on Liverpool’s radar. Simakan is an exceptional, highly-rated, versatile defensive player, and Liverpool are said to be exploring the market for central defensive opportunities in the final hours of the window.

However, Newcastle United are also making a swing at the 24-year-old – who’s reportedly available for £42m – as they look for alternatives to Crystal Palace and England international Marc Guehi. His contract with the Bundesliga club runs until 2027 and he has a release clause of just under $80 million.

Liverpool.com says: Liverpool have numbers in central defense in the form of Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Jarrell Quansah. But - if Arsenal are anything to go by - more quality in defense is certainly not a bad thing and would give Arne Slot the chance to rotate.

Simakan is highly-rated, but Liverpool are keeping their options open. With Newcastle also strongly linked with the Frenchman, Marc Guehi could yet be a shock swoop while names like Ousmane Diomande, Castello Lukeba, and Alessandro Bastoni linked with Liverpool.

It seems Richard Hughes will move for a defender before the window slams shut. Lets see what happens.
