5 last-gasp transfers Liverpool could secure on Deadline Day

    By Liam Corless,

Arne Slot has told Liverpool's fans that they shouldn't expect too much activity from the Reds on Deadline Day, but did leave the door for new signings slightly ajar as he confirmed the Reds are open to making additions if the right opportunities arise .

Liverpool has signed two players in Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa, but many fans would've liked to have seen more arrivals, particularly considering several players have left the club this summer.

With the window closing in a matter of hours, it seems unlikely that any major business will materialise, but Liverpool.com has picked out five players whose situations are worth keeping an eye on over the course of the day.

    Alan Varela

Porto midfielder Alan Varela has been linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the summer. The 23-year-old only joined Porto last summer, signing for the Primeira Liga club from Boca Juniors, but enjoyed an excellent season at the base of their midfield.

It is no secret that Liverpool wanted a new No.6 this summer, with a big-money move for Martin Zubimendi frustratingly falling through earlier in August, and Varela has a release clause that is of a similar value to the fee the Reds were willing to pay for Zubimendi.

Zubimendi had a €60m ($66m) release clause, while Varela's is €65m ($72m). Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, however, reported on Friday that Liverpool had not made contact with Porto over the possibility of signing Varela.

    Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney has agreed terms on a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, with Brentford accepting a £40m ($57m) bid for the England striker.

However, there is some confusion as to whether the deal will actually go through. Al-Ahli has also agreed terms with Victor Osimhen, but there is only room for one new overseas player in their squad, meaning that it is unlikely that both players will join the club.

If Al-Ahli favours signing Osimhen, that would leave Toney, a Liverpool fan, in limbo. Darwin Nunez has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, and if he does leave, the Reds might be on the look-out for a last-minute striking addition.

A proven Premier League striker, Toney might just fit the bill for Arne Slot.

    Alessandro Bastoni

Liverpool has been loosely linked with a move for Alessandro Bastoni, as well as other centre-backs like RB Leipzig's Castello Lukeba, with suggestions the club could be in the market for a new centre-back if Joe Gomez leaves the club.

At this stage in the window, it feels unlikely that there is enough time left for Gomez to depart and a new player to arrive, especially given the Reds are not particularly desperate to get rid of the England defender.

Gomez has been linked with Newcastle and Crystal Palace, with suggestions that Newcastle could swoop for Gomez if it misses out on Marc Guehi, while Palace could move for him if it sells Guehi to Newcastle.

    Santiago Hezze

Santiago Hezze is a name not many football fans will have heard of until recently. It was claimed by Greek football reporter Stephen Kountourou that Liverpool had made Olympiacos midfielder Hezze a late midfield target.

However, the Athletic's James Pearce quickly addressed the claim and said that Hezze, a 22-year-old Argentine, is not currently on Liverpool's radar.

    Miguel Gutierrez

Spanish outlet Fichajes is infamous for its spurious transfer rumors and it recently claimed that Liverpool is one of five major clubs tracking Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez.

Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are also said to be monitoring Gutierrez, who joined Girona from Real Madrid in 2022.
