Liverpool to face stiff Premier League competition if Anthony Gordon transfer is revisited

Liverpool's interest in Anthony Gordon didn't materialize into anything concrete this summer, and if the club revives its interest in a future window it could be faced with competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The Daily Mail reported that the Gunners expressed an interest in Gordon ahead of Friday's deadline, but that Gordon is set to remain a Newcastle player for the 2024-25 season.

It is reported that early talks over a new contract have been opened between Newcastle and Gordon. Gordon has two years left on the contract he signed when he joined the Magpies on a three-and-a-half-year deal in January 2023.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is said to be a big fan of Gordon, with the Mail suggesting the North London club could look to sign him next summer.

Gordon is said to be happy at Newcastle, where he has established himself as one of the most exciting young wingers in the Premier League .

However, the prospect of returning to Merseyside with Liverpool, the club he supports, is undoubtedly an appealing proposition. Liverpool held talks over signing Gordon earlier this summer but was ultimately unwilling to meet Newcastle's demands for the player.

Newcastle's new sporting director Paul Mitchell and manager Eddie Howe were both keen to keep Gordon and have ultimately got their wish for the time being.

Liverpool has not been particularly active with regards to new signings this summer, with only Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa recruited and the closure of the window a matter of hours away.

Liverpool's new sporting director Richard Hughes said in July that Liverpool would be opportunistic during this summer's transfer window.

Meanwhile, Reds legend Jamie Carragher said last weekend that he believed Liverpool was planning for future transfer windows behind the scenes , rather than rushing into any signings during this summer's window.
