Federico Chiesa's dad, the former Italy forward Enrico Chiesa, told his son that joining Liverpool would be the best thing for his career.

Asked about the advice his dad had given to him after finding out about Liverpool's interest, Chiesa revealed: "He said go. As soon as Liverpool [came in], he said go, it’s the best choice for your career."

Chiesa joined the Reds this week for a fee that could rise to $16million after being frozen out at Juventus by new Bianconeri manager Thiago Motta. Football clearly runs in the family for the Chiesa family, with retired striker Federico, 53, having turned out 17 times for Italy from the 1990s to the early 2000s.

Enrico scored seven times for his country, with one of his goals actually coming at Anfield during a Euro 96 match between the Azzurri and the Czech Republic.

During an interview with club media this week, Federico was shown the footage of his dad's goal from 27 years ago - and admitted that, while he recognised the goal, he didn't realise that it was scored at Anfield!

"I know this goal, I know this," Chiesa said. "He didn't tell me that he scored this at Anfield! He didn't tell me about this because usually when we speak about the Euros, he doesn’t want to speak about that because I say I won it, he has not won it!

"We have the picture of him celebrating after he scored that goal, but honestly I didn't know that it was at Anfield so this is a great memory for my family, my father, and so I think my father is happy for me to join Liverpool. He always talks to me about the goals he scored, he scored more than me and I have to reach him."
