Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says he has "plenty more years left" in soccer despite the 33-year-old center-back being inside the final year of his contract at Anfield as things stand.

Arne Slot's side has been tight-lipped on the prospect of negotiations taking place for Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah with each of the three pillars of the Liverpool team having contracts that expire in 2025. But now the transfer window has closed, a crucial few months lie ahead before January, when each can agree terms with clubs abroad ahead of next summer.

"I feel very good personally, I feel like it is nowhere near the end so far. There are plenty more years left and let’s see what happens," he told the PA News Agency . "It is the one per cent which makes a difference in terms of looking after yourself and the work you do at home in terms of recovery and treatment, making sure you eat the right stuff, rest.

"That’s what I’ve been doing for so many years and that’s why I’ve been consistent in the amount of games I’ve been playing over the last couple of years. That’s maybe the most difficult thing nowadays in football: staying consistent and playing the amount of games and being available.

"Maybe that is sometimes taken for granted. I won’t say that’s the case with me, but more in general. After the international break, we have double programs every week [with the Champions League starting] and I kind of enjoy that because games are the most beautiful thing there is, especially when you play for a club like Liverpool."

Liverpool.com says: Signing Van Dijk up for another few years seems like a no-brainer. He isn't at his absolute peak but he is showing no signs of a sudden decline and he remains one of the very best in the world in his position. If Liverpool was to attempt to replace Van Dijk in the transfer market, it would be a very expensive player who was required, and there are no obvious names to go with.
