Liverpool already knew that it would be facing Real Madrid, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan, Lille, PSV, Bologna and Girona in the Champions League this season after Thursday's UEFA draw, but the dates of those matches have now been confirmed .

Because of the complexities of the new so-called Swiss model , which is used across the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League, it has taken a couple of days to work out the fixture schedule. UEFA has now confirmed, however, when the matches will be and the order in which they will be played.

At Anfield , Liverpool will be playing Real Madrid , Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Bologna — one team from each pot. It will also travel to Leipzig, Milan, PSV and Girona — again, one team from each of the four seeded parts of the group phase.

Liverpool will begin its Champions League campaign with a trip to the San Siro to take on AC Milan. The Anfield game with Real Madrid, which is the standout fixture from the Reds' perspective, will take place at the end of November on matchday five.

    • AC Milan v Liverpool – Tuesday September 17, 8pm (UK time)
    • Liverpool v Bologna – Wednesday October 2, 8pm

    • RB Leipzig v Liverpool – Wednesday October 23, 8pm

    • Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen – Tuesday November 5, 8pm

    • Liverpool v Real Madrid – Wednesday November 27, 8pm

    • Girona v Liverpool – Tuesday December 10, 5.45pm

    • Liverpool v Lille – Tuesday January 21, 8pm

    • PSV Eindhoven v Liverpool – Wednesday January 29, 8pm

The teams are all placed in one big league table with the top eight, after everyone has played their eight matches, going through to the last-16. The middle 16 teams will face each other in a play-off to determine who progresses, meaning there is a significant incentive to avoid the extra games and finish in the top quarter of the standings.

Liverpool.com says: While there are some tricky matches for Liverpool to play, the Reds should be able to win enough games to come inside the top eight. Doing that would be a big boost in terms of freeing up more space in the calendar later in the season.
