Former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp has revealed how Arsenal midfielder Jorginho waxed lyrical over new Reds signing Federico Chiesa when the pair recently filmed an episode of A League of Their Own.

Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus for a fee that could rise to $16million during the final week of the transfer window, as he became the club's only outfield signing of the summer.

Chiesa's reputation has taken a hit in recent years due to injuries and poor form, but Redknapp is confident that Liverpool has signed a great player, providing he stays fit.

“As a Liverpool fan, I am delighted with this bit of business!” Redknapp said. “It’s a difficult one because he obviously had a lot of injuries. I think back to the Euros when they won it, Italy. I was filming a League of Their Own [episode] and spoke to Jorginho about him when he was on the show a couple of days ago.

“I asked what he thought of him and he said, 'he carried our Italian side for so long, he was amazing'.

“He has obviously had injuries, but if Liverpool can get him back to fitness and make sure they manage his minutes carefully, they have got an absolute bargain and a star. He has got amazing pace.”

Chiesa was linked with a move to Anfield in 2021, with one report by Italian outlet La Repubblica at the time suggesting Liverpool had a €100million ($111m) bid for the player rejected by Juventus.

At the time, Chiesa was on loan at Juventus from Fiorentina, but Juventus had already agreed a deal to buy the winger as part of the terms of the agreement and thus held the cards over his future.

A serious knee injury curtailed Chiesa's career but, at 26, he has plenty of years ahead of him and Liverpool will hope he proves to be a steal at the cut-price fee they signed him for.
