4 transfers Liverpool could revisit in January after summer disappointment

Liverpool could look to revisit up to four transfers in the January transfer window after bringing just two fresh faces through the doors this summer.

It took until the final week of August for the Reds to snap up Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa on permanent deals - and that was only after a number of targets had slipped through their fingers in the weeks leading up to the start of the campaign.

The most notable of those was Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi , who had been identified as Arne Slot's number one target as he looked to resolve Liverpool's defensive midfield gap ahead of his first season in charge.

However, despite the Spaniard reportedly giving sporting director Richard Hughes his word on a move to Anfield , it ended in agony for the Reds as the 25-year-old performed a dramatic U-turn to remain with his current club.

But seeing as though a deal appeared incredibly close, it's reasonable to suggest that the Reds may go back in once more in the hope of finally convincing Zubimendi to up sticks from his boyhood club and secure a move to the Premier League .

With a release clause of just €60 million (£51m/€66m), he is more than affordable for the Reds, although whether that increases between now and January given Liverpool's recent interest is yet to be seen.

Also on the cards could be a potential revisit to the Anthony Gordon situation, which took the Reds by surprise at the start of the summer when they were offered the chance to sign the 23-year-old winger by Newcastle as it looked to meet PSR guidelines.

That move quickly fizzled out once the Magpies had recouped money from other player sales, while it emerged that Newcastle is keen to fetch a $131 million (£100m/€119m) package for the England international if it is to consider parting ways with its prized asset.

However, one major advantage for Liverpool is that it knows Gordon is open to making the move to Anfield . Despite his Everton links, the former Toffee is a Red at heart and previously spent time in the younger age groups before his switch to Goodison Park.

Defense is also an issue Liverpool has been keen on rectifying and the club was at one point strongly linked to Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace , before it was strongly criticized for not pursuing a move for the Eagles defender. However, patience may finally pay off.

The England international was the subject of three rejected bids from Newcastle as the Eagles insisted on holding out for $98 million (£75m/€89m) for the player, yet he remains a Selhurst Park asset for now. But with the 24-year-old set to enter the final 12 months of his contract next summer, that price could soon drop.

While it's not expected to change much by the time January rolls around, Liverpool still has the perfect opportunity to get a deal over the line in four months' time, especially considering it hasn't shelled out on any players over the summer.

Finally, Porto midfielder Alan Varela could come back into the fold. Not only is he a viable alternative to Zubimendi, he could be much easier and cheaper to sign, too.

Reports very late into the window suggested the Reds were eyeing the Argentine as a last-minute swoop ahead of Deadline Day, yet nothing materialized. However, according to Spanish journalist Luis Fregossi, the Reds first began looking into a possible pursuit of Varela and inquired about his availability back in April.

The 23-year-old has a release clause worth $72 million (£55m/€65m) and has drawn considerable interest from multiple clubs, although Porto view him as “non-transferrable” and intends on improving his contract that’s set to expire in 2028.
