Sir Jim Ratcliffe's reaction to Liverpool's Old Trafford rout summed up Manchester United perfectly as the Red Devils fell to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat .

A first-half brace from Luis Diaz and a second-half strike from Mohamed Salah secured all three points for Arne Slot's side in his first Northwest derby on Sunday as the Reds took the bragging rights back down the M62.

It was certainly an afternoon to forget for Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag , who watched his side succumb to Liverpool's perfect front-foot attacking football in the newly named "Dutch derby".

And during the game, things got so bad for the hosts that Ratcliffe could no longer hide his emotions as the game edge towards its conclusion, with the 71-year-old pictured planting his head in his hand.

It bore a sorry state of affairs for the British billionaire, who could only watch as the side he backed with millions of pounds this summer failed to live up to expectations on its own turf. Surrounded by other members of the Red Devils hierarchy who looked equally unimpressed, Ratcliffe could not escape from the disaster unfolding in front of him.

United's new owner invested more than $263million (£200m/€238m) into Ten Hag's side this summer, helping the club secure deals for five new players in key positions to help push towards a top four finish.

Three of those in Joshua Zirkzee ($47.9m), Matthijs de Ligt ($50.6m) and Noussair Mazraoui ($16.8m) were all named in the starting lineup for the hosts, yet none could impact proceedings and prevent the Reds running away with the game.

Perhaps the worst performance was from mainstay midfielder Casemiro , who was at fault for both of Liverpool's opening goals and was subsequently withdrawn at half-time for his performance, being replaced by 20-year-old debutant Toby Collyer to add further insult to injury for 2022's, $92m (£70m/€83m) signing.

Yet despite the summer spending spree, it was the team who had spent a paltry $13.3m (£10.1m/€12m) in the transfer window on one new addition that dominated from start to finish.

Hopefully for Ratcliffe, United's other three big money signings in Leny Yoro ($67.9m) and Manuel Ugarte ($55.3m) might be able to impact proceedings in a better way once they return to action, although that isn't expected to be any time soon.
