Jamie Carragher hits nail on the head with 'bottled it' comments about Manchester United

Jamie Carragher is spot on with his comments on 'bottlers' Manchester United following Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool .

The Reds ran rampant at Old Trafford with first-half goals from Luis Diaz and a second-half strike from Mohamed Salah as Arne Slot's side moved up to second in the Premier League , while their opponents dropped as low as 14th.

It may only be three games into the season but the Red Devils have failed to inspire during the early stages of the campaign, following up last weekend's 2-1 defeat to Brighton with an embarrassing loss in the Northwest derby.

United does have one victory to its name in the form of an unconvincing 1-0 win against Fulham on the opening night of the 2023-24 campaign, yet it already seems to be a repeat of the same issues for the Red Devils this season despite a summer of spending.

And Carragher believes that Man United's owners, INEOS, only have themselves to blame for the poor start to the season, having stuck with Erik ten Hag as manager when they had the opportunity to replace him over the summer.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) after the game, he wrote: "It’s a fact that Ineos have got a manager in ETH that they don’t really want. We all know that & that’s why the scrutiny on him will intensify after every bad result."

Following the end of last season, United's new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe led the search for a new manager to kickstart INEOS's reign at Old Trafford, yet couldn't find a suitable candidate and ultimately stuck with Ten Hag, extending his current deal by an extra year.

Yet for as long as Ten Hag remains in charge and Man United struggle to get good results, criticism of the Dutchman will continue to flood in. And as Carragher rightly says, INEOS only have themselves to blame, having opted not to sack the Dutchman following last season's eight-place finish in the Premier League - United's worst in top flight history.

Instead, Ten Hag has entered his third season as Red Devils boss, and already things are looking bleak after just three games of the season, with United picking up just one win from three games and sitting in the bottom half of the table with a -3 goal difference.
