Xabi Alonso makes promise after Liverpool icon suffers Bayer Leverkusen setback

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso believes his side will 'learn from their mistakes' after losing their first domestic game in 43 matches to RB Leipzig .

Alonso, whose Leverkusen side went unbeaten in the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal last season, let a 2-0 lead slip against Leipzig on Saturday, losing 3-2 in stunning fashion. The reigning Bundesliga champions, who only lost in the Europa League final to Atalanta last season, looked to be well in control of the contest at the BayArena thanks to goals from wing-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo.

But the former Liverpool midfielder was left scratching his head when Leipzig managed to turn the game around. Right before the break in added-on time, midfielder Kevin Kampl pulled one back for Leipzig following Frimpong and Grimaldo's goals.

And in the second half, a brace from Belgian striker Lois Openda saw Leipzig overturn their 2-0 deficit to claim an incredible win at the home of the German champions. Clearly less than pleased with his sides performance, Alonso affirmed after the game his side would 'learn from their mistakes'.

Alonso said: "In the second half we had no control and gave Leipzig too much space. We will learn from these mistakes. We can't let the opponent come back after a 2-0 lead. It's a process and we're still early in the season."

He added: "After the 2-0 lead we were in a good flow, but then we have to be ready to defend. We want to attack together, but we also have to defend together. We will work on the game after the international break."

And Liverpool will get the opportunity to see just what Alonso means when they face off against Bayer in the Champions League . The Reds will host Alonso and Leverkusen in November after being drawn against them during last week's Champions League draw.

For Liverpool fans, it will be an interesting clash to see just how new Reds boss Arne Slot deals with Alonso's side. The Spaniard was Liverpool's first choice to replace Jurgen Klopp after the German announced he would be stepping down last season, only for Alonso to commit his future to Leverkusen, spurning the Reds advances.

Instead they opted for Slot, a decision which so far, looks to have paid dividends after Liverpool's sensational 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool.com says: "The tie between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen - an in-turn Alonso and Slot - in November is a mouth-watering clash between two excellent sides. Prior to that, Liverpool will have played three games in Europe's elite club competition, taking on AC Milan, RB Leipzig and Bologna before welcoming Alonso back to Anfield."
