Arne Slot's Liverpool just proved Jurgen Klopp right with Man Utd victory

Liverpool's comfortable win on Sunday was the Reds' first victory over Manchester United in four meetings, and Jurgen Klopp might have been watching on wondering where his side's ruthlessness was during last season's three games between English football's oldest rivals.

Luis Diaz struck twice in the first half before Mohamed Salah scored his 15th goal for Liverpool against United, extending his record as the fixture's all-time top scorer.

The ease with which Liverpool won came as little surprise, but it wasn't the first time Liverpool has dominated at Old Trafford this year - the Reds were also the better team in March's FA Cup thriller, which United won 4-3, and the Premier League encounter a month later, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

In many ways, the performance of Slot's side vindicated Klopp's comments after both of those matches, when the German bemoaned his players' failure to put the game to bed after dictating proceedings for large spells.

After the FA Cup quarter-final meeting, which was settled by a late Amad Diallo winner, Klopp said. “We could have won the game and we would have deserved it. We were outstanding but we had to finish the game off and we didn’t. At 2-1 up, we had so many chances to kill the game off - we were in a rush in some moments and the rest is already history."

A month later, after Liverpool came from 2-1 down to claim a point courtesy of a Mohamed Salah penalty, Klopp said: "We should have won the game, that is clear. We should have had other goals in the first half already. No shots in the first half and 1-0 is the lowest we could expect."

For a third time in 2024, Liverpool was the better team at Old Trafford, only this time the Reds got what they deserved: an emphatic victory.
