Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler outlines Mohamed Salah contract ultimatum after 'last year' admission

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has outlined how the club should target contract talks with superstar Mohamed Salah after the forward admitted it could be his final year at Anfield .

Salah, 32, scored goal No. 214 for the Reds in Sunday's 3-0 demolition of rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Egyptian star has shown no signs of slowing down - but he has admitted it is looking like it's his final year at Liverpool despite his legendary status with no talks over a new deal being had .

"Nobody in the club has talked to me about contracts. It is not up to me, it is up to the club," Salah admitted after the game. "As you know, it’s my last year in the club. I just want to enjoy it, I don’t want to think about it," he added.

Fowler believes that if Liverpool is open to offering Salah a new deal, it should offer the player the maximum terms and leave the ball in his court. In years gone by, the club has allowed key players to depart Anfield for free or on the cheap - like James Milner , Bobby Firmino, and Sadio Mane.

Speaking to Liverpool.com for the announcement of golf's Icon Series , which will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, next March, Fowler said: "I think the conversation from a Liverpool point of view is, 'Look, this is the maximum contract we can give you.

"'I'm not interested in negotiations. This is what we're going to offer you.' Then you put the ball into the players' courts and if he decides not to, then it's entirely his decision.

"Again, speaking from a fan, I think you want your great players to stay there. There's no doubt Mo is a great player. He's been outstanding since he came to the club, so yes, of course you want them.

"We've also got to think of the business model Liverpool have. This is our model and this is the maximum we can give you. If you don't accept that, then unfortunately we're going to have to separate them part ways."

Saudi Arabia has been the most-linked destination for Salah to arrive at. He was the subject of a $197 million bid from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad last September.

Salah on a free transfer would save one of Saudi's leading clubs a large sum of money without a transfer fee, but they would have to splash out on signing bonuses and the weekly salary of the player across his deal. Liverpool may not be able to financially compete with what Saudi can offer, but they do have a rich history, and the player's attachment to Anfield, and its faithful, could tip the scales in their favor.

Liverpool.com says: The club should do the best that they can to keep Salah at the club beyond next summer. He hasn't lost his magic touch yet and could be vital as Arne Slot continues his project at Anfield. It would be surprising if Salah were to choose the undeniable riches on offer in the Middle East right now, instead of staying for a season, or two, longer to compete in the world's best soccer competitions.
