Alexis Mac Allister and Virgil van Dijk agree on Liverpool transfer that could be a masterstroke

Liverpool's capture of Italy winger Federico Chiesa could go down as the steal of the summer if the Reds can keep the Italian free of injury. His medical history — and his contract only having 12 months left on it — meant he was available for around $13m (£10m/€12m).

But Chiesa has shown in the past — particularly at major international tournaments — that his ceiling is very high. And at the age of 26, the Italian's best years could still be ahead of him.

"He is a player who will help us a lot and will raise the level of everyone," Alexis Mac Allister told ESPN Argentina . And that echoes similar thoughts from Virgil van Dijk , who was speaking ahead of the win at Old Trafford on Sunday .

"I think in terms of the season being so long with so many games we definitely could use any quality addition that will be needed and to have Chiesa coming in is a very good signing, especially for the deal that has been done," he said, via The Independent .

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot also said something similar once Chiesa's move was confirmed. "Excited [to have signed him]," he replied when asked during his press conference ahead of facing Manchester United about the transfer.

"If we sign someone who can help us achieve our goals and improve the squad, of course we are really excited that we brought him in. One of the best things about working here, what I’ve noticed so far, is the culture of this team, they work really hard to achieve their goals.

"It is then really important the first player you bring in has that same attitude and brings the same culture. He works really hard on and off the pitch to try to get the best of himself, and he combines this with scoring goals and really aggressive without the ball."

Liverpool.com says: Chiesa could be a really handy addition this season. Mohamed Salah might want to play every minute of every game but if the Egyptian can be rested a bit more often, that will only be a good thing for his longevity. Having Chiesa to come off the bench for 20 minutes here and there when Liverpool has the points wrapped up is a real luxury.
