Ex-Arsenal captain has title race concern and makes Liverpool and Man City prediction

    By Tom Malley,

An ex- Arsenal captain has already admitted his title race fear amid Liverpool and Manchester City's flying start to the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

The Reds have begun the Arne Slot era in perfect fashion with successive victories over Ipswich , Brentford and Manchester United , while Pep Guardiola's reigning champions have done the same against Chelsea , Ipswich and West Ham .

Both sides possess the same goal difference but it is Man City who have pipped top spot on goals scored, although Liverpool remain the only side in the Premier League with a perfect defense, having yet to concede a single goal.

Three other sides currently sit below them on three points, including the runners-up in the last two seasons, Arsenal, who were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Brighton on Saturday after controversially going down to 10 men.

However, former Gunners defender and club captain William Gallas says it is no excuse for the North London outfit not to pick up maximum points in their clash with the Seagulls, and claims it has already posed a major setback in the race for the title.

Speaking to Gambling Zone , he said: "From what I’ve seen so far, I fear for Arsenal in the title race. I fear for Arsenal because even though they went down to 10-men against Brighton, you have to win those games and they couldn’t get over the line.

"Even when you have 10 men, if you want to win the Premier League you have to find a way to get three points. Then if we see how Liverpool played against Manchester United, they look so strong. Manchester City with Erling Haaland in top form too. It looks like it’s going to be very difficult for Arsenal."

The Gunners next come up against Tottenham and Man City away from home, representing two incredibly challenge fixtures for Mikel Arteta's side. The latter face Brentford at home before welcoming Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium, while Liverpool take on Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth in that same period.

And following Liverpool and Man City's electric starts, combined with a tough return to action for Arsenal after the international break, Gallas fears the Reds and the Citizens couold run away in the title race.

"I’m concerned that Liverpool and Manchester City could run away with it," the 47-year-old added. "It’s so important to start the season with a winning run and look at the message Liverpool sent with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford. You need to have opponents scared before the game even starts and that is what Liverpool have done. It’s a strong message.

"Then if you look at Manchester City, the smaller teams really don’t want to play against them because you know what is going to happen. Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal are in the same bracket but I don’t think Arsenal have the strongest squad."
