Liverpool stance on new Luis Diaz contract emerges after Barcelona and Man City links

Liverpool is not yet planning to hand Luis Diaz a new contract depsite links to Barcelona and Manchester City in the transfer window.

It was at one point feared the Colombian could be departing Anfield this summer but he has responded to such claims with an electric start to the new campaign , bagging three goals and an assist in Arne Slot's first three games in charge.

His performance in the most recent fixture in particular - two goals in a 3-0 victory away to Manchester United - have propelled the 27-year-old into the limelight and prompted rumors of a new contract from the Reds.

It comes just mere weeks after Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and even Man City were linked with a move for the winger, who still has three years left to run on the deal he signed in January 2022 following his $49.4million (£37.5m/€44.5m) move from Porto.

However, reports that Diaz is set to be offered a new contract imminently at Liverpool have been dismissed, with the ECHO reporting they are wide of the mark. Furthermore, online figures suggesting the Colombian earns around $72,400 (£55,000/€65,300) a week have also been dismissed.

As things stand, both Liverpool and Diaz are said to be 'relaxed' over his contract situation, especially given the Reds still have to sort out the long-term futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold , Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah after the trio entered the final 12 months of their deals this summer.

With this in mind, fresh terms for Diaz are unlikely to be agreed any time soon, not at least until the aforementioned trio of Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah have been sorted first. For now, Diaz remains an integral part to the side and a new deal is not imminent.

However, should the Colombian continue his impressive start to the season and, for example, reach double figures in goals and assists before the New Year, then it can be imagined that Liverpool may take the matter more seriously.

For now, the former Porto man must continue performing as well as he had done as Slot aims to keep Liverpool well and truly in this season's title-race. Should his form dip, then Cody Gakpo will be waiting in the wings ready to replace his teammate in the starting XI.

But Diaz can perhaps thank Slot for his early season form, having been identified by the Dutchman as a player he could work with and improve . By using one-on-one sessions focused on his off-the-ball positioning, when to make runs and choosing the right time to pass or shoot, Slot has fine-tuned Diaz for the current campaign.
