Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville clash again over Arne Slot during fiery Erik ten Hag debate

Just days after their heated discussion on Sky Sports following Liverpool's win over Manchester United , ex-rivals turned punditry pair Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have clashed once again.

Liverpool managed to dispatch Man United comfortably 3-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a brace from Luis Diaz and a second half strike from Mohamed Salah. The Reds maintained their impressive start to the season and head into the international break with a perfect record.

Comparatively, United have lost their last two to Liverpool and Brighton after an opening day win against Fulham, something which has heaped pressure upon Ten Hag, who has come under fire. On Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford, Carragher and Neville argued about United keeping the Dutchman at the helm after a poor season last term.

  • Mohamed Salah reality clear and Sadio Mane proves it with Liverpool contract decision looming
  • Mohamed Salah contract dispute summed up by Cesc Fabregas' devastating message to Liverpool fans
  • While they did defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup final, United finished eighth in the Premier League, which led to them considering a replacement for Ten Hag in the summer. Ultimately, they opted to keep the Dutchman, and even gave him a new contract, something which Carragher believes was the wrong decision.

And days after they clashed on Sky Sports, the two former rivals are back at it again, this time on ' The Overlap ', brought to you by Sky Bet. Once again, Carragher raised the point United should have sacked Ten Hag at the end of last season, which Neville contended was a difficult decision for the INEOS and Jim Ratcliffe to take given the managerial market this summer.

Neville then also added Liverpool found it hard to replace Jurgen Klopp, with Xabi Alonso thought to be the Reds first choice to take over from the popular German before they settled on Arne Slot after the Spaniard opted to stay with Bayer Leverkusen. However, Carragher then hit back at Neville's claims Liverpool found it difficult to replace Klopp, prompting tensions to flare once again.

Jamie Carragher: "I can't believe what United did after the FA Cup final. He was probably on trial after INEOS came in. They must have been thinking about his future before they beat City at Wembley. You review the season as it goes on, not at the end. We know United's owners were thinking about sacking him. They should have come out straight after the FA Cup final and backed him. Now we are saying he is under pressure after losing two matches!"

Gary Neville: "I think there was some sentiment after the final. The fans wanted Ten Hag to be kept on and backed. They have seen enough managers sacked over the years. I think they sounded out Graham Potter, Gareth Southgate, Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel around that time. But there was a bit of a negative reaction from fans.

"There is no doubt they were having a flirt around the market and seeing what they could do. I think if there was an unbelievable manager that could improve United 100 percent, beyond what Ten Hag could, they would have made a change. Liverpool had six months to replace Jurgen Klopp and still found it challenging to get their top targets."

JC: "Where are you getting it from that Arne Slot wasn't Liverpool's top target?"

GN: "We do record these episodes you know and I do have a memory. You said they would definitely be going for Xabi Alonso."

JC: "That is my opinion! I am sure they did ask about Alonso and were told straight away that he was staying at Bayer Leverkusen. How do we know exactly what went on behind the scenes at Liverpool?"

Liverpool.com says: "It seems astonishing that after watching Manchester United for the past season and the beginning of this one that Ten Hag is still being defended by the likes of Gary Neville.

"Under Ten Hag, United's midfield resembles a slice of Swiss cheese. There are holes everywhere. It gives their back four zero protection and no platform to build from. They've spent astronomically (as have a lot of big clubs) during the Dutchman's tenure and while things looked to be heading in the right direction during his first season in charge, the fact of the matter is United look to be regressing."
