What Steve McManaman has heard about new Liverpool contracts

    By Tom Malley,

Liverpool legend Steve McManaman has made a big statement regarding the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold , Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah .

The Reds trio are out of contract next summer and the club is yet to resolve their long-term futures, with fears over them all leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season beginning to seep in.

Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid , Van Dijk admitted in July that he does not know where his club future lies , and Salah dropped a major bombshell last week that Sunday's trip to Old Trafford could be his last in a Liverpool shirt.

And despite the trio all starting the season in excellent fashion under new manager Arne Slot , with the Reds sitting second in the Premier League following three wins from three, it appears the club is no closer to resolving any of their futures.

However, it appears things could be about to change, with Liverpool icon McManaman recently revealing what he’s heard about the contract situation now the 2024-25 campaign is fully underway.

Speaking on ESPN , he said: “You hope the three deals will be done and I know Liverpool are talking to them already about these contracts now the transfer window is out the way.”

If what the 52-year-old has said is true, then it looks like Liverpool is finally on its way to resolving the issue. However, this isn't necessarily to say that all three of Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah will extend their stay beyond this season.

Naturally, it would appear that tying down Alexander-Arnold to a new deal has to be the main priority. Still only 25-years-old, the right-back has become one of the best in his position in the world and still has plenty more to offer - and has previously admitted his desire to become club captain , being a local lad.

As for Van Dijk and Salah, despite their importance to the team and world-class quality, things are slightly different. At 33 and 32-years-old, respectively, the ageing trio aren't getting any younger and this could cause difficulties in negotiating new deals.

Already earning top dollar on Merseyside, Liverpool won't be overly keen on offering the duo bumper new deals at their age, with it unlikely anything more than a two-year extension would be offered. However, it's clear they can both continue playing at the highest level for some time.

But Salah perhaps has the edge over Van Dijk if push came to shove, going by his goals and assists record since joining the club in 2017. Furthermore, his electric start to the season, which includes three goals and three assists in the opening three games, proves he is showing no signs of slowing down.
