Jurgen Klopp has criticised Manchester United's decision to let go of Jadon Sancho, insisting that the manager should have stood by the player rather than labelling him as "useless".

Sancho's future was a hot topic this summer following his successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund last season, where he helped the team reach the Champions League final.

This success came after a public disagreement with Erik ten Hag , which resulted in Sancho being dropped from a matchday squad a year ago. This led to a period of isolation in Manchester, before he was welcomed back into the first-team group this summer.

However, a deadline day loan move to Chelsea appears to have ended his time at Old Trafford. This means his disappointing stint in Manchester is over - but Klopp believes he should have received more support before being sold.

The ex-Liverpool boss said prior to his deadline day switch: "If the whole world loses trust and faith in the player, the manager has to be the one behind the player. I cannot just buy into that ‘he's useless,’ like other clubs did by the way - buying a player for £80 million and then sending him out on loan!"

Sancho has parted ways with United after scoring a mere 12 goals. The English winger, who lost his place in the England squad following his Premier League return, is now on a mission to re-establish himself at Chelsea.

United's sporting director Dan Ashworth justified Sancho's departure by pointing to the wealth of attacking talent at the club. With Ten Hag not including Sancho in his plans for the season's opening fixtures, it was clear that opportunities would be scarce.

Ashworth told Sky Sports : "I think with any player, whether it’s Jadon, whether it’s Scott (McTominay) or whether it’s Aaron (Wan-Bissaka), if there’s a preference that they would like to move and go to a new club and it’s right for them and it’s right for us, then you have to explore it.

"We felt we had enough depth in that particular position to be able to cover it, we’ve got four really good wide players, Jadon was a fifth, and it just enabled us to make that decision. If it was good for him and good for us it was something we were willing to consider."
