Jamie Carragher in Brexit rant after Liverpool coach denied 'chance of a lifetime' at Real Madrid

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has expressed his frustration over Brexit after Stockport County's assistant manager Andy Mangan was denied a move to Real Madrid.

Mangan made headlines last week when he was sought out by Carlo Ancelotti to join his coaching team at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 38-year-old, who has played for Tranmere Rovers, Wrexham, and Accrington Stanley, has been part of the coaching staff at the newly promoted League One side since their rise to the third tier of English football. His relationship with the Ancelottis goes back to when he was earning his coaching badges alongside Carlo's son, Davide.

Davide, who is his father's right-hand man at Real, highly recommended the Liverpool native. The transfer seemed almost certain, with Mangan even starting Spanish lessons and scouting schools in Madrid for his children, according to The Times.

However, his dream appears to have been shattered after being refused a work permit in Spain. Following the UK's decision to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum, Brits wishing to work in European countries are now required to secure a work permit.

Although this decision can be contested, it's unlikely to be reversed, meaning Mangan's aspirations of working for the La Liga titans seem to be finished. Carragher, incensed by these events, criticized the Brexit vote on X, marking a rare political comment from the former Liverpool defender.

The Sky Sports pundit tweeted: "Chance of a lifetime lost for a young English coach, but he's got a blue passport so I'm sure he'll get over it (thumbs up emoji) #BrexitShambles."

With the potential move to Madrid now off the table, Mangan will refocus on his duties at Stockport, as the Greater Manchester side gears up for their upcoming match against Crawley Town this Saturday.
