Pep Guardiola has tipped Brentford boss Thomas Frank , who has previously been linked with the Liverpool job, to take the reins at one of Europe's top clubs in the future.

The Manchester City manager was full of praise for his counterpart following his team's 2-1 victory over Brentford , a match in which Erling Haaland's double helped City secure the win despite an early goal from Yoane Wissa putting them on the back foot.

Guardiola was asked if he was surprised that Frank hadn't yet made the move to a "big club", to which he responded: "It is just a question of time. I'm good in a few things, one of which is reading when the manager is good. It is going to happen."

Frank, in turn, expressed his gratitude for Guardiola's comments. He said: "First, thank you for that, Pep - it is always nice. There are a lot of reasons why I admire Pep. He always shows class and did it when we beat them here last time, almost 50 games ago. I am very happy at Brentford but maybe one day I will try something new."

Rumours have previously linked Frank with a move to Manchester United, particularly during the summer when there were significant doubts surrounding Erik ten Hag's future at the club. Liverpool was embroiled in speculation as it searched for Jurgen Klopp's successor, with eyes briefly turning to Thomas Frank, but the Reds eventually went for ex-Feyenoord chief Arne Slot.

Guardiola didn't just focus on the potential future of Thomas Frank; he was quick to commend Brentford's formidable form. He added: "I dont remember in eight or nine years a team that plays the way like Brentford did in the first 20 minutes. I give credit to them. We were not at our best. It's not easy to handle it. They deserve to be 0-2 or 0-3 up.

"Every time they have the ball they create a chance. I don't remember a team creating this kind of situation [against City]. Long balls, duels, short passes, they break the lines. Quick in the transitions, strong in the recovery and set pieces. An extraordinary team."
