Roy Keane and Ian Wright agree on $28m transfer Liverpool could make in January

Liverpool is said to be eyeing a swoop for England's latest standout star this January, with the player already earning high praise from the likes of Roy Keane and Ian Wright .

After England's 2-0 triumph in their Nations League game against Finland last week, where Harry Kane grabbed the headlines with two goals on his 100th appearance, it was not just the skipper who made waves. Lille midfielder talent Angel Gomes caught the eye on his full debut for the Three Lions.

At 24, Gomes has proven himself at Lille following his brave departure from Manchester United's academy four years ago, becoming a key fixture in their starting line-up.

His polished performance at Wembley didn't go unnoticed, showcasing his slick skills with the ball and a disruptive pressing game. Keane, acting as ITV pundit, was visibly impressed, stating: "He was impressive and so busy," singling out the London-born midfielder, and remarking on the selection dilemma he now poses for Lee Carsley, England's interim boss.

Keane's endorsement means a lot given his own esteemed Premier League career as a dominant midfielder, and fellow pundit Wright supported his take, commenting: "He's constantly available. There's great options (for England). There will probably be a bit of a headache for the manager."

Liverpool scouts were reportedly in attendance to watch the under-17 World Cup winner make his England debut , as per Football Insider . This comes after a summer of frustration for the Reds, having missed out on their primary midfield target Martin Zubimendi , who chose to remain with Real Sociedad.

The interest in new talent is particularly timely following Liverpool's disappointing performance and loss at home to Nottingham Forest . Dominik Szoboszlai's handling of the ball left much to be desired, and Ryan Gravenberch seemed to lack his usual spark, despite previously showing signs of revival under Arne Slot's guidance.

Gomes, currently impressing in France, has been praised for his adaptability and skill in both defensive midfield and more attacking roles. His contract situation makes him an attractive prospect for FSG, as he'll be available on a free transfer come summer.

Transfermarkt values him at a modest $28m (£21m/€25m), but with Newcastle and Tottenham also rumored to be interested in a January swoop, Liverpool might have to up their offer to secure their man.

Reflecting on his decision to leave Manchester United as a youth player, Gomes explained his move: "I was looking for more playing time, more consistency and a plan for my future. I came to LOSC, who offered me a good structure and a good project."

Liverpool.com says: We're not too sure Gomes would be the answer to the No.6 role at Liverpool, and his performance against Finland is certainly not enough to make a definitive judgement on him. What's more, he is reportedly keen on a move back to Old Trafford, so you'd imagine joining the Reds might not be the most attractive prospect for him.
