Paulo Fonseca piled praise on Liverpool as his AC Milan side gears up to face the Premier League giants in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Milan and Liverpool are two of the most successful clubs in European Cup history, with Milan having won the European Cup seven times in its history, and Liverpool having done so six times.

Liverpool has had greater success in the competition in recent years, reaching the final in three of the last seven seasons, while Milan's last appearance in a final came back in 2007, when the Rossoneri beat Liverpool 2-1 in Athens to gain revenge for the Reds' comeback in Istanbul two years earlier.

Despite Milan having home advantage, Liverpool is the favorite to win the match and Fonseca knows his players have a job on their hands to record a positive result at the San Siro.

He said: “They are a great team, they are one of the strongest teams in Europe at the moment. They have a very strong positional game and individuals that we all know. We will have to be a defensively perfect team to win.

“In the Champions League against this type of team, we cannot make mistakes. If we make one mistake they’ll score. We will have to be a complete team in defence to then be able to attack with stability. At the moment, for me, they are one of the strongest teams in Europe.”

Milan started the new season in disappointing form, failing to win any of its opening three Serie A games and conceding six goals. However, the Italian giants beat Venezia 4-0 last weekend to build their confidence ahead of Liverpool's visit.
