James Maddison chooses between Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and Man City star Kevin De Bruyne

Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison believes Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is " the best midfielder player ever probably in the Premier League ."

For years, there has been a conversation between who was the best of England's golden generation of midfielders, with Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes the three names consistently debated. While Gerrard did not have the domestic honours the other two did for Chelsea and Manchester United, the ex-Liverpool skipper still remained in the conversation due to his consistent levels of brilliance that single handedly won the Reds games.

He was instrumental in helping the Reds produce the comeback of all comeback's during the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan, but could never quite help Liverpool over the hump when it came to the Premier League.

However, despite this, Maddison still reckons Gerrard was "the ultimate midfielder", choosing the former Liverpool star as his 'best Premier League midfielder ever' over Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne.

Speaking to Sky Sports for their 'Sticker Book Challenge', Maddison was asked to choose between Gerrard, Lampard, De Bruyne and Luka Modric. And when it came to decision time, he picked Gerrard over the other three.

“Gerrard, oh, it’s going to be tough not to put him in there because I do think he’s the best midfield player ever probably in the Premier League," said Maddison .

"The only thing is because he’s still playing now, Kevin De Bruyne, I think when he’s finished and when we look back I think he’s going to be number one. What he can do with the ball is just ridiculous.

“I’m going to go for Steven Gerrard. The ultimate midfielder. He literally was the ultimate midfielder, he could do everything. And my mum was a big Liverpool fan so I maybe got influenced by that."

Liverpool.com says: "That Gerrard is even in the conversation of the best Premier League midfielder ever, despite having never won it, speaks volumes for just how good a player he was.

"That said, should City win the title this season, De Bruyne will have won seven Premier League's. He will also have been an integral part of a side that will have won five consecutive Premier League titles. We love Gerrard here at Liverpool.com, but there's no doubt De Bruyne isn't at least in the conversation for the greatest Premier League midfielder of all time."
