AC Milan legend Clarence Seedorf said that it will not be easy for Liverpool to replace Virgil van Dijk's experience if the Dutchman leaves Anfield at the end of the season.

Van Dijk's contract is due to expire at the end of next June, and the Reds are in a tricky spot with a number of other players, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah also into the final year of their deals.

Liverpool may need to cut its cloth accordingly with regards to contract renewals, but Seedorf believes retaining Van Dijk would be a good piece of business. “Everything can happen, right, at this stage of a career,” Seedorf said on talkSPORT. “You can expect him to leave, but I would also not be surprised if Liverpool would try to keep him because, you know, experience, you can’t buy that easy.

“He is still very fit, so let’s see what’s going to happen at the end of the season.” Van Dijk himself said during the recent international break that he wants to extend his stay on Merseyside, as he stated his intention to continue competing at the top level until the 2026 World Cup at the earliest.

“At both teams (Liverpool and the Netherlands) I am still Virgil van Dijk, the big leader!” he said during the recent international break. “And I certainly want to remain that for the next two years."

Meanwhile, Van Dijk said he is excited to return to the Champions League as Liverpool gears up to take on AC Milan in the San Siro. “I missed it. I can’t wait to be out there hearing the Champions League tune and leading out the boys. A club like Liverpool needs to be in the Champions League and we are finally back and let’s go out there and put a much better performance in than we did today [Saturday] as it is needed otherwise you are going to have an issue.

“I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully all our fans travelling over there to support us will be in high spirits and loud voices.”
