Trent Alexander-Arnold named in England squad alongside Real Madrid mate

    By Tom Malley,

Lee Carsley has named his second England squad since taking over as interim boss and has once again included just one Liverpool player.

The Three Lions take on Greece and Finland in its next set of UEFA Nations League fixtures in October's international break and will be aiming for two more victories following 2-0 wins over the latter and the Republic of Ireland last time out.

In both of those games, Trent Alexander-Arnold was named as first-choice right-back and the Reds defender will once again be involved - and expected to start - after being named in Carsley's squad for the next two fixtures this month.

It means there is once again no place for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones in the side, having already been left out of September's victories over Ireland and Finland despite being called up to Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for Euro 2024 during the summer.

Fellow Reds Joe Gomez , who was part of that Three Lions squad in Germany, and Harvey Elliott also not involved, with the latter still nursing an injury that has kept him sidelined since the last international break.

Carsley has largely stuck with the same 23 players he named in his first England squad since taking over as interim boss following Southgate's resignation in July, meaning the likes of Angel Gomes, Noni Madueke, Morgan Gibbs-White and Rico Lewis have all kept their places after receiving their first call-ups last time out.

There is also a place for Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham, who returns to the side after being ruled out through injury last time out, while former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke has been called up for the first time in seven years following three goals in five games for Tottenham since the last international break. His teammate James Maddison, however, remains out.

Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers has also been denied a call-up despite his impressive start to the campaign under Unai Emery, and will instead remain with the Under-21s, while Manchester United's Harry Maguire, remains out after falling down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag this season.
