Everton dealt fresh Jarrad Branthwaite setback amid Liverpool transfer speculation

Jarrad Branthwaite's fitness is in question ahead of Everton's clash with Newcastle United. The centre-back made a strong return to the pitch over the weekend, helping the Blues secure their first Premier League win of the season against Crystal Palace.

Sean Dyche had chosen to start Branthwaite following his recovery from a groin operation earlier this summer. Just six days prior, the defender had played a full match for the Under-21s in a victory over Sunderland.

Branthwaite seemed to come out of the Palace match unharmed, and his key interventions led to his name being sung from the Gwladys Street End during the final moments of the 2-1 win.

  • The England international has been training since his comeback and took part in team activities at Finch Farm on Wednesday. However, his availability for the Newcastle match, scheduled for 5.30pm on Saturday, is now uncertain due to a suspected quad issue that is currently under evaluation.

If he's unable to participate, then Blues manager Dyche will have to choose between Michael Keane, who started alongside James Tarkowski before Branthwaite's return, or summer recruit Jake O'Brien, who started in the Carabao Cup penalty shootout loss to Southampton.

The return of Branthwaite has reignited rumors about his future. Manchester United had two offers turned down in the summer after he burst onto the scene last season as one of Europe's most exciting defensive prospects.

It was also reported by the Daily Mail that Liverpool is keen on signing the defender. United is unlikely to reignite its interest until next summer after its significant outlay on the likes of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, and that could open the door for Liverpool to make a shock bid.

Everton feel they are in a strong position regarding any interest, having made headway on financial and regulatory issues, and with the player tied down to a contract until 2027.
