Manchester United's captain Bruno Fernandes has faced another blow after being shown the red card for the second time in less than a week.

He was previously sent off in United's Premier League thrashing by Tottenham on Sunday, and has now received his marching orders yet again during their Europa League clash against Porto, following a high-footed challenge in the 82nd minute.

The United star, already on thin ice with an earlier yellow for a similar offence, stretched for the ball with a high foot and collided with a Porto defender who went to ground holding his face.

  • Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson weighed in on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Bruno Fernandes is not happy. He has gone in high with his foot and it is dangerous," and added, "In Fernandes' defense he is looking at the ball, but when you do that you give the referee no option."

This card compounded a night of misery for United who, despite racing to a two-goal lead within 20 minutes through Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, failed to maintain their advantage as Porto fought back fiercely.

Pepe initiated the comeback, before Samu Omorodion's undeniable presence saw him net twice, overturning the game to lead 3-2. It was left to Harry Maguire to rescue a point for United, heading home an Eriksen corner as a late-game equalizer.

Fernandes did appeal his dismissal in the defeat to Tottenham, which was eventually overturned by the FA . He was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on James Maddison.

It means he will be free to play in this weekend's clash with Aston Villa, with United in desperate need of three points. Last weekend's home defeat to Spurs ramped up the pressure on boss Erik ten Hag.
