Premier League split emerges after nine clubs including Liverpool took sides in Man City battle

Liverpool was one of six teams to be recorded as a witness for the Premier League and against Manchester City in one of their legal cases against the league.

Liverpool, along with Arsenal, Manchester United , Tottenham, Brighton and West Ham had acted as witnesses for the Premier League , while Chelsea , Newcastle and Everton had been witnesses for City.

Of course, Liverpool has been rivals with City throughout the past eight years - battling them in the Premier League finishing second behind them in the league twice with the two teams dominating the league throughout much of that period. Manchester United and Arsenal, who have also both finished second behind City in the league in that period, remains rivals with the team having acted as witnesses against them.

The Premier League's Associated Party Transcription (ATP) rules had been deemed unlawful by a tribunal after Manchester City had two different sponsorship deals blocked after a change in the regulations. These regulations were put in place by the league after Newcastle United's takeover by the Saudi Arabian-ran Public Investment Fund.

Manchester City's legal win is not directly related to the highly-anticipated disciplinary hearing, in which the club will answer 115 chargers for allegedly breaching the Premier League's financial regulations over an extended period.

After winning their recent legal battle, a report from The Times has suggested that they could strike more lucrative deals, while also seeking damages from the league. Their report states: "If the rules are altered and commercial loan rates are now applied to these interest-free loans and have to be included in a club’s profitability and sustainability calculation, many clubs could find they are in breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR)."

Liverpool.com says : "While this legal win for Manchester City will be a blow to the Premier League, it should be stressed that the champions are certainly not out of the woods, by any means. The club still must answer to the 115 chargers placed against them for breaking the league's financial regulations, in which they could still suffer a severe points deduction and potential relegation from the league."
