Liverpool star told 'the writing is on the wall' under Arne Slot after $33m transfer decision

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been advised to leave Anfield because the "writing is on the wall" for him under Arne Slot . The Reds agreed a deal for Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer and he will arrive in 2025.

Alisson Becker , meanwhile, who picked up an injury at Crystal Palace at the weekend, is the current number one. The Brazilian remains under contract at Liverpool until 2027. "I want to honor my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one," he told the BBC in August. "I am really happy here. My family is happy."

A route to regular action for Kelleher is therefore hard to see. And former Premier League and Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne believes he should be itching to make a move away to a club that can offer guarantees of minutes.

  • "When I watch Kelleher, I don't notice the difference between him and Alisson," Dunne told Bet Victor . "He must make a move away from Anfield for regular football. There's no question he's good enough.

"They’ve signed Mamardashvili who will come into the side next season. The writing is on the wall for Kelleher unfortunately. Liverpool won’t likely let him leave this season, but he just needs to prove his talent when he gets his chances in cup games and international fixtures. He’s definitely good enough to be a keeper consistently at the top level."

Liverpool did not want to lose Kelleher on the cheap during the summer and Alisson's injury has only underlined why that was the right decision . But the Irish shot-stopper has not been quiet recently in terms of expressing his desire to play more often.

"I made it clear in the last few years, I want to go be a number one and play week in, week out," he said during the last international break . "The club made the decision to get another goalkeeper. From the outside looking in, it looks like they have made a decision to go in another direction.

"My ambition has always been clear the last few seasons that I want to be a number one playing week in, week out. Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like it is 100 per cent my decision but at times, it is not always in my hands."

Liverpool.com says: Kelleher is going to get a run in the team now, in all likelihood, because of Alisson's injury. And is playing a significant part for Liverpool in the league and the Champions League not something to savor?

That seems like a better scenario than playing every week for a mid-table team. The only benefit with dropping down a level is the minutes are guaranteed rather than sporadic, even though Alisson's injury history suggests he does fairly frequently have to sit out periods of a season.
