Mohamed Salah may soon be given a transfer option that makes much more sense than Saudi Arabia

Even if Liverpool was only doing it to avoid losing Mohamed Salah for nothing at the end of the season, it makes sense to offer the Egyptian a contract extension. At 32, his physical powers might have waned slightly, but he remains Arne Slot's best attacker .

Salah has scored or assisted 11 goals in 10 appearances so far this season and in the final third, he is still Liverpool's likeliest avenue for a breakthrough. His electric pace has gone but his passing is better than ever and Salah is still the man you would want a one-vs-one chance to fall to. He has off-games, but he is still usually reliable. He would still fetch a decent fee on the market.

Nonetheless, as long as his contract situation remains as it is at the moment, Salah is going to be linked with moves away. A Saudi Arabian team saw a bid worth $196m (£150m/€179m) turned down last year and will attempt to get him on a free transfer if nothing changes at Anfield .

  • That, though, will not be Salah's only option. Plenty of teams in Europe would surely look to sign him for nothing should that scenario be realized, while TBR Football reports that Salah and Kevin De Bruyne are both drawing interest from new MLS franchise San Diego FC.

Owned by the British-Egyptian businessman Sir Mohamed Mansour, who owns the famed Right To Dream football academy in Ghana and also the Danish side FC Nordsjaelland, San Diego has already snapped up Mexican star Hirving Lozano. Salah and De Bruyne would be another level of player to capture.

It is important to note that there should be no appetite from Salah to head to the USA just yet, though. While MLS is growing, staying at Liverpool would keep him at the top of the game and penning a contract extension would put more goalscoring records in sight for the Egyptian — as well as some more major trophies.

But if Salah was to sign a new contract and eventually leave Liverpool when his powers have waned, MLS should be a solid option . Saudi Arabia, of course, will remain on the table for Salah, and the region's salary offers would reflect the desperation to bring him in. Going to the USA, however, would be a more competitive option that could be much more appealing.

By the time Salah should be looking to leave Liverpool — or at least seeking an exit from the top level of the European game — the USA will have hosted the World Cup. MLS will have further grown and will be looking for the next superstar after the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have drawn their careers to a close. In Salah, there would be the perfect next pick.

Like with Saudi Arabia, a move to MLS shouldn't be on the agenda for Salah in the summer of 2025. In the future, though, once he is done playing at a Champions League -level club, moving to the United States should much of an appeal as the Saudi Pro League. It would be more suited to someone in their late 30s than the Premier League and the wages and the lifestyle would be good. For now, though, Salah's main priority should be extending his stay on Merseyside.
