Jurgen Klopp has intriguing hidden clause in Red Bull contract as Liverpool icon ends hiatus

Jurgen Klopp is back in work after agreeing to become Red Bull's 'Head of Global Soccer' - but the specific details of his contract hint at a much larger role.

The German has been out of a job since stepping down from his position as Liverpool head coach at the end of last season but will take on his new role as of January 1, 2025 , where he will oversee Red Bull’s international network of clubs and advise them on playing philosophy, transfer strategy and coaching development.

This includes Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, MLS giants New York Red Bulls and Pep Lijnders' RB Salzburg, which will see Klopp reunite with his former Liverpool assistant for the first time since they left their Anfield roles at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

But what has really caught the eye is one of the clauses inserted into Klopp's long-term contract with the energy drink's giant, which not only suggests a return to management for the 57-year-old but also who he will step back into the dugout for.

According to SkySportDE journalist Florian Plettenberg , Klopp has secured an "exit option" that allows him to leave his role with Red Bull to become the head coach of the Germany national team in the future, as a potential successor to Julian Nagelsmann.

Klopp has been linked with the Germany head coach role since leaving Liverpool but continued to reinstate his decision to take a one-year sabbatical from any football-related activity - although that has now been shortened to just eight months following his recent appointment with Red Bull.

Nonetheless, the German will not return to club management, at least, anytime soon and will only venture back into the dugout for the national team should he wish to take on the position with Die Mannschaft.

Former Bayern Munich head coach Nagelsmann has only been in the role for little over 12 months and extended his contract until the 2026 World Cup earlier this year, suggesting the German FA are happy to keep him in charge for the time being.

The 37-year-old led his side to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 during the summer and has won eight of his 15 games in charge, representing a fairly average start to life in the hotseat. The current aim is to reach the Nations League Finals next year by finishing top of the group, which started with a win and a draw against Hungary and the Netherlands last month.

Nagelsmann is unlikely to be sacked if he fails to lead Germany to its first ever Nations League finals but it certainly wouldn't help his cause for the long-term. A run of bad results would certainly mount pressure and should he fail to lead his nation to the World Cup in less than two years' time, Klopp may be called upon earlier than he'd think.
