Liverpool is rumored to be on the brink of becoming an Adidas 'elite team' if they decide to partner with the German kit manufacturer after their current deal with Nike expires.

Sport Business hinted back in April that the Reds were considering parting ways with the American supplier in a bid to enhance the value of their sportswear contract.

By September, it seemed almost certain that Adidas had outpaced Puma in the race to secure Liverpool's signature, with a five-season agreement from the start of the next campaign reportedly agreed upon. It's believed this $495m (£375m) deal will mirror Arsenal's current arrangement with the German kit manufacturer, estimated at $98m (£75m) per season.

  • At present, Liverpool's contract with Nike has a base value of £30m, which is boosted to £60m when the added value of association with the American retailer is factored in. For Liverpool, a return to Adidas would mark the first time the legendary kit brand has crafted their shirts since the 2011/12 season.

An official announcement regarding the Adidas deal is anticipated early next year. When the ECHO recently questioned Liverpool about the possibility of switching brands, the club remained tight-lipped.

However, a Footy Headlines report suggests that the Reds are poised to enjoy the 'elite team' status, a privilege reserved for only a select group of top-tier clubs.

This top-tier deal with Adidas ensures that the Reds will be kitted out in the 'authentic kit', featuring the designer's Heat. Dry technology. The third kit will also sport the iconic 'Adidas Originals' trefoil logo.

Manchester United and Arsenal already enjoy this privilege with Adidas, while Newcastle United are rumoured to be joining these ranks for the first time, alongside Celtic and AS Roma. Juventus, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid round off the nine-strong 'elite team' portfolio.

In a surprising turn of events, it seems Aston Villa won't make the cut. Despite joining the Adidas family this season after their contract with Castore ended, and even qualifying for the Champions League, it appears they won't be part of the 'elite team' next year.
