Lee Carsley has explained that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be playing a "different" role at left-back after moving the Liverpool star out of position for England's game with Finland.

The Three Lions interim boss has come under fire for his latest experiment involving the 26-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes of Thursday's 2-1 defeat to Greece in his usual right-back position.

However, with Manchester City's Kyle Walker coming into the starting XI, Carsley has opted to switch Alexander-Arnold to the opposite side of defence in a career-first for the Liverpool academy graduate.

Explaining his decision to ITV ahead of Sunday's clash in Helsinki, Carsley said: "He's a multi-versatile defender but his role will be a little different to a conventional left-back. I've got a lot of confidence in Trent."

Alexander-Arnold will play in a back four alongside Walker, John Stones and Marc Guehi as England looks to return to winning ways following that shock loss to Greece at Wembley.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson replaced Jordan Pickford between the sticks, while Angel Gomes comes into the side to partner Declan Rice in midfield.

Jude Bellingham is expected to play further forward in the midfield three, with Cole Palmer and Jack Grealish playing either side of Harry Kane in attack.

There is no place in the squad for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones , who departed the England camp over the weekend due to personal reasons .

A victory for England would see it draw level on points with Nations League group leaders Greece, which plays the Republic of Ireland later today.
