Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez took to social media to rally his teammates following Uruguay's unexpected 1-0 loss to Peru in their World Cup qualifier on Saturday. Despite the result, Arne Slot will have no doubt been pleased with Nunez's showing of maturity.

A late goal from Miguel Araujo sealed the win for Peru, their first in 10 qualifying matches, and lifted them off the bottom of the South American table. Despite the setback, Uruguay remains third and on track to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

In the CONMEBOL qualifying format, each country plays the other nine teams both home and away, with the top six teams securing World Cup spots after 18 rounds. The seventh-placed team will enter the FIFA play-off tournament, offering an alternative route to the World Cup.

Nunez, who was cleared to play after a successful appeal against a suspension for his involvement in Copa America controversy , urged his teammates to improve ahead of their home match against Ecuador on Wednesday.

"Work to improve, there is no other [way]," he posted in Spanish on Instagram. "Go Uruguay always!" Despite the defeat, it shows Nunez is taking on a leadership role to keep morale high and sign of maturity. It is perhaps an important stp after the five-game ban he received.

The Uruguayan media praised Nunez's performance, with El Pais noting that "he was the one who tried the most, but was very alone in attack". Since making his debut for Uruguay in 2019, Nunez has netted 13 goals in 30 appearances.
