Liverpool Legends' next opponents and game date all but confirmed

Liverpool fans aren't far from surviving the second international break of the season, which has been an unwelcome interruption to a great start under Arne Slot . Thankfully, a Legends fixture is now in the calendar to help alleviate the boredom of a future Premier League hiatus.

As has been more or less customary for some time, the Liverpool Legends are once again preparing to play a match during the March international break. According to The Athletic , the date of March 22 has already been lined up, with Anfield once again serving as the venue.

That's 364 days on from the last match, a 4-2 win over Ajax in which Steven Gerrard returned to captain the side and the late Sven-Goran Eriksson fulfilled his dream of managing the Reds . Previous opponents include Barcelona, Milan and Celtic, while a two-legged encounter against Manchester United took place in May and September of 2022.

It seems the Liverpool Legends will once again face English opposition next March. Tantalizingly, a clash against Chelsea has been organized.

For many of the Legends, this was a fixture that defined their playing careers. Participants will not be confirmed for some time, but we can probably expect plenty of the most recent squad to reprise their roles.

The likes of Dirk Kuyt, Fabio Aurelio and of course Gerrard all had memorable clashes with Chelsea down the years, while Fernando Torres would go on to swap Anfield for Stamford Bridge. All four played against Ajax Legends, and it would be great to see them in action against the Blues.

The fixture is not yet finalized, but talks are said to be at an "advanced stage", to the point where the date has already been pencilled in. An announcement could come next month.

Liverpool.com says: Anfield always more or less sells out for these matches, a sign of just how popular the club is. For many, it's their best chance of ever getting a ticket, or perhaps even sitting on the Kop.

If this fixture gets the green light, you can expect the demand to be higher than ever. For a specific generation of Liverpool fans, myself included, Chelsea was almost on a par with Manchester United when it came to animosity, with familiarity breeding plenty of contempt.

The idea of seeing old rivals meet one last time is hugely appealing. It might be for charity, but the game is unlikely to be anything other than fiercely competitive. Time to put in calls to Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho?
