Arne Slot opts against Liverpool arrangement Jurgen Klopp called 'incredible'

Arne Slot has made continuity the name of the game at Liverpool in many ways. Certainly, the results have been much the same as what fans got used to under Jurgen Klopp , with the wins continuing to flow — but the Dutchman has made at least one significant change at the club .

In fact, beyond the familiar personnel, the broadly similar formation and the requirement for intensity, Slot has brought in quite a few changes. We've counted at least four .

The latest to come to light has seen Slot do away with an innovation that always greatly enthused Klopp. With Liverpool top of the Premier League , we're yet to see any obvious adverse effects, but the proof will be in the pudding as the campaign goes on.

Over the summer, Liverpool advertised for a set piece coach . It's clearly an area of the game Slot and his staff have no intention of neglecting.

However, per The Athletic , he has decided to go without the services of Neuro11. In a novel partnership, the German firm first linked up with Liverpool in 2021, promising to help players reach their optimal mental state — particularly around dead ball situations.

Players would have electrodes attached to their heads to read brain activity. The idea was to tap into the science of "getting in the zone".

Klopp hailed Neuro11's "incredible" role in Liverpool's domestic cup double in 2022, where the Reds twice prevailed over Chelsea on penalty kicks. The Reds also topped the table for set piece goals in 2022/23, coming second in 2021/22 and fourth in 2023/24.

It's early days in the Premier League season, but Liverpool is currently down in 14th , having scored once from a set piece ( Arsenal leads the way with three). While it is far too early to draw anything by way of conclusions, that does come amid the end of the club's relationship with Neuro11.

The partnership expired in May, and Slot reportedly elected not to renew it. There are no plans to reverse that decision.

Liverpool.com says: We'll need a far bigger sample size before wondering whether Liverpool is missing the impact of Neuro11. If nothing else, with many of the same players still at the club, you'd assume the benefits of the collaboration would still be ongoing now despite their departure.

Having said that, it's certainly an interesting decision from Slot, one that breaks with the narrative of continuity above all else. Slowly but surely, he is putting his own stamp on things.

Hopefully, that does involve developing an effective set piece strategy over time. The priority has rightly been on finding routes to goal in open play, but a few extra corners or free kicks finding their way in can make a big difference over the course of a season.
