Thomas Tuchel is set to be unveiled as the new England manager later this week , following an agreement with the Football Association. The German boss quickly became the favorite for the role on Tuesday, after leaving his position at Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

Once it was confirmed that Tuchel was interested in the job, FA chiefs swiftly entered into talks with him. The deal has now been finalized, making Tuchel only the third permanent foreign manager of the England team in the country's history, following in the footsteps of the late Sven-Goran Erikkson and Fabio Capello.

The search for a new manager began after Gareth Southgate stepped down from his role at the end of Euro 2024.

  • Lee Carsley has been holding the fort as interim manager, steering the Three Lions through the Nations League. However, after last week's defeat to Greece and Sunday's victory over Finland, Carsley made it clear he would not be taking on the role permanently.

As reported by The Times , Tuchel emerged as the top candidate after Mark Bullingham, the FA's chief executive, and technical director John McDermott approached him last month. Since being let go by Bayern, Tuchel has effectively been on gardening leave, although it's not expected that the Bundesliga side will demand compensation.

Tuchel has had spells in charge of Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, PSG and Chelsea. At Stamford Bridge, he claimed the Champions League before leaving the club in 2022.

His trophy cabinet also boasts a DFB-Pokal win with Dortmund in 2017, a couple of Ligue 1 titles courtesy of PSG, and most recently, the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich in 2023.

England's captain, Harry Kane, knows all too well the qualities Tuchel brings to the touchline, having worked under his guidance at Bayern. With a staggering 44 goals in 45 matches with Tuchel at the helm, Kane's praise is hefty.

Speaking to Sky Germany about the whispers of Tuchel's discussions with the FA, Kane remained coy: "To be honest, I haven't heard anything specific about it yet. That's why I can't really comment on it until it's officially announced.

"We'll have to wait and see what happens. I obviously know Thomas very well from the last year. He's a fantastic coach and a fantastic person. I'm sure the FA will contact me when they know more about this issue."
