Gary Lineker gets off the fence in Trent Alexander-Arnold England debate

Gary Lineker has hailed Trent Alexander-Arnold following another impressive showin g on international duty for England .

The October international break was particularly significant for The Three Lions, who fell to a shock home defeat against Greece in the first of two Nations League fixtures last week before responding with a much-needed three points in Sunday's 3-1 victory over Finland .

Then, former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel was announced as the next England manager as of January 1, 2025 , signing an 18-month contract that will see him lead the side into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

But perhaps the biggest take away for Liverpool fans, in particular, was Lineker's comments on who he believes is the best passer of the ball in the current England set-up, following claims that captain Harry Kane currently holds that title.

However, rather than sitting on the fence, the Match of the Day host went straight for the jugular and named Alexander-Arnold as the player who has the best distribution, following on from yet another impressive showing for his nation in its victory over Finland - where he scored a sublime free-kick .

"I have Trent’s stats here," Lineker began on The Rest is Football podcast. "One free-kick scored, obviously, 130 touches, 95 passes completed, six accurate long balls, ten passes into the final third, three out of three duels won, four ball recoveries and two clearances."

When asked by co-host Micah Richards if the 26-year-old is the best passer in the England team, Lineker replied: “As good of a passer as anyone in world football," before adding: “Kane can pass, but he still isn’t Trent.”

Despite being bizarrely played out of position at left-back by interim manager Lee Carsley for England's win in Helsinki, Alexander-Arnold continued to showcase his class and rarely looked as though he struggled in his new role.

This certainly won't become a regular occurrence but it once again showed that the academy graduate is capable of playing in a number of positions if needed, further highlighting his all-round game and overall class.

With 89 assists for club and country throughout his professional career, Alexander-Arnold clearly has an eye for a pass and possesses the ability to execute them perfectly, something Lineker has finally taken on board with his answer for England's best distributor.
