Liverpool boss Arne Slot has explained why he favors a more controlled based system to Jurgen Klopp's heavy transition style utilised by the Reds in seasons past .

Ahead of their clash against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, Liverpool sit top of the Premier League, having won six of their seven domestic games this term. They have lost just once in all competitions, and look set to compete for multiple honors this season.

One of the major differences this term compared to last season however is the style in which Slot has Liverpool playing. The Reds look more controlled in possession than they did in Klopp's last few seasons on Merseyside.

And as a result, that has led to them preventing teams from hurting them in transition. Liverpool has the best defence in the Premier League this term, having conceded just two goals.

Last term, after seven Premier League games, Liverpool had conceded seven times, keeping just one clean sheet in the process. And speaking to Sky Sports , Slot explain why he favored a control bases system to one which allows for heavy transitions.

Slot said: "Yeah, but more than that, I think it's also about if you had to run a lot to recover the ball, to get the ball back, and then if you lose it, immediately afterwards, I see players from my team with their head down thinking, s**t, we have to defend again, we have to run again.

"But the other team gets a lot of confidence because they immediately have the ball back again. So, it's not only this extra pass that maybe gives you a better rest defence, football is also a mental game. And if you have the ball a lot, you feel more comfortable, you feel better.

"So, yeah, if this pass after transition immediately leads to a chance and the fans are loud, that also gives you the right energy, mental energy. But if you pick out a difficult ball without, so a lot of risk, without a lot of reward, if it finds your team-mate, then I think another choice would have been better."

Liverpool.com say: "There's no doubt Liverpool look more controlled during games under Slot than they did under Klopp last term. However, Slot still has a long way to go to match Klopp's feats."
