Man City gets VAR boost in rare refereeing decision amid Liverpool title race

Manchester City survived a stoppage time VAR scare against Wolves to claim a 2-1 win, sending them top of the Premier League .

Facing off against Wolves, Pep Guardiola's side went 1-0 down at Molineux when Jorgen Strand Larsen tapped home Nelson Semedo's excellent cross on seven minutes. The defending Premier League champions replied just after the half hour mark through Josko Gvardiol, who scored a sensational strike from outside of the box on his weaker foot to equalise for City.

For much of the second half, City toiled looking for a winner that would send them to the top of the Premier League ahead of Liverpool's clash against Chelsea. And while it looked as though they would come away from Molineux with just a point, Guardiola's side found their winner when John Stones headed home in the dying embers to make it 2-1.

But, whilst City were celebrating their goal, attention was immediately turned to the sidelines, with Gary O'Neil adamant Bernardo Silva had interfered with goalkeeper Jose Sa prior to Stones' winner. Silva was in an offside position, but did not look to be interfering with play.

A VAR check ensued, with referee Chris Kavanagh being sent to the monitor to check whether Silva did infringe Sa. However, after viewing the incident, Kavanagh decided the goal should stand, sending City's players into rapturous celebrations.

A tweet from the Premier League's official match center account explaining the decision read: "#WOLMCI – 95’ VAR OVERTURN Stones’ goal was disallowed on-field due to Bernardo Silva being in an offside position and in the goalkeeper’s line of vision.

"The VAR deemed Bernardo Silva wasn’t in the line of vision and had no impact on the goalkeeper and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned his original decision and a goal was awarded."

With Arsenal dropping points to Bournemouth on Saturday, Man City's win over Wolves moved them top of the table. However, should Liverpool beat Chelsea at Anfield, they will return to the Premier League.
